Decker's parents moved to Louisiana in the early 90s. Decker won a regional talent contest with her version that was a cover of the Patsy Montana song I Want to Be a Cowboy's Sweetheart in the year she was barely nine. At the age of 15, Decker resided in Georgia. Decker had begun writing songs, and was regularly going to Nashville in search of a record deal. In 1997, she'd reached the age of 17 when she was approached by a Big Yellow Dog Records rep saw her. He began to sell her songs as well as music to numerous recording labels and artists. The demos of Decker were sent through to L.A. Reid by Mercury Records President David Massey, who was at the time in charge of Island/Def Jam. Reid then agreed to sign Decker to a contract with a record label. Jessie James released her debut album in the month of August. It was a self-titled release. Jessie James, which featured Wanted as a top single on the Top 40 Singles Charts was moderately well-received. Decker was always viewed as a singer from the country genre, but the album's marketing and production was targeted at a more pop-oriented audience. After two more singles from the album, Decker struggled with the label's executives to have more control of her music. her subsequent track Boys in the Summer was a more country-oriented release. The second album of Decker's was released with the name Daughter of a Gypsy, or Sweet American Dreams. Mercury was able to cancel it, and three of her country tracks failed. She was then released.
